Inaugurated in 1966, the Surrey Festival of Dance saw 450 dancers—not bad for a first year! The Festival would grow to be much, much bigger, however. Now the competition hosts over 10,000 competitors. And where early competitors competed at everything from churches to libraries, they now compete at first-class performance theatres such as the Surrey Arts Centre and the Bell Centre for Performing Arts. The competition is a great opportunity for competitors, who can gain invaluable experience, make new friends and even win scholarships and bursaries to continue their education in dance.
The Festival also hosts a few special events in addition to regular competitions. The “No Borders’ Group Dance Challenge” is a completely open dance challenge with over $13000 in cash and the title of “Grand Champion” on the line. The Dance & Wellness Seminar Workshop is a great opportunity for students and teachers alike to learn about nutrition and injury prevention in addition to dance.
For more information about the festival, check out their website. Tickets to performances are available at the door.
