Celebrate White Rock’s Irish Festival This March

posted by: Pacific Inn Resort Hotel on: February 28, 2014 9:57:07 AM
You’ll have plenty of opportunity to get your green on in White Rock this month, as March is Irish Heritage Month. Irish-themed events such as poetry readings, live music, workshops, Irish dancing and more will take place around town for the whole month as part of White Rock’s Irish Festival—and many of these events will be free!

Kick off the month with your best Irish spirit and your greenest attire as part of the Irish Flash Mob that takes place at the White Rock Pier on March 2nd from 2:00-5:00.  The rest of the month features all kinds of events all around town:

  • enjoy live Irish folk music, poetry and more at a number of pubs and bars throughout the city
  • take in Celtic story nights and a St. Patrick’s Day Dinner & Dance at the White Rock Elks Hall
  • participate in a number of workshops and Irish films at the White Rock Community Centre.
  • discover Irish literature with readings at the White Rock Library

The festival concludes with the Irish Festival Wrap Up at Ceili’s Modern Irish Pub, which features Team Hewitt, the Eire Born Irish Dancers and the Crescent Beach Pipe Band.

Of course, Irish folk are well known for their unique expressions and sayings. As such, it might be a good idea to brush up on your Irish jargon before hitting any Irish-themed event while in town. Here are some bits of Irish jargon that you should familiarize yourself with:

  • Grabbing a drink with a sham?  Don’t worry, he’s just a good friend!
  • Don’t be a gowl—that’s someone who’s highly annoying.
  • What’s the yoke? It could be anything; yoke” is a broad descriptive term that could be interchanged with “thing” in Canadian English.
  • Who’s that muppet? Irish muppets aren’t necessarily furry—they are simply anyone who is foolish.
  • That’s deadly. Don’t worry; no one’s going to bite the bullet. In Ireland, “deadly” is synonymous for “fantastic”.

Now that you’ve got some lingo down, you have no reason not to check out the Irish Festival, if you’re passing through White Rock this March. And while you’re here, you should also definitely check in to the Pacific Inn Resort & Conference Centre, White Rock’s premier hotel.
